THE JAA TEAM
JAA senior staff have held high-level positions in government, corporations, trade associations and the media, including in the Executive Office of the President, White House Press Office, White House Council on Environmental Quality, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, National Institutes of Health, the Senate and the House of Representatives. Their media experience includes production of Emmy-winning TV documentaries, ABC News, CBS News, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Kiplinger Letters, San Francisco Chronicle, White House Bulletin, Congressional Quarterly and the London Daily Telegraph. They have written books on public policy, op-ed articles for the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune, and numerous technical articles for professional publications.
JAA is also notable among public affairs agencies for expertise in science issues. The JAA science practice is headed by a senior vice president and principal of the firm with a Ph.D. in microbiology, a degree in chemistry and research expertise at the National Institutes of Health.
A. JOHN ADAMS
President of John Adams Associates and founding chairman of the Worldcom Group, Adams has been a public affairs consultant to major corporations, governments, industry associations and non-profit groups for more than 35 years.
He was formerly a director of public affairs in the Executive Office of the President, a network news and documentary writer for ABC and CBS, and a correspondent for the Daily Telegraph in London. He is the author of two books and numerous articles on public policy. A recipient of numerous professional awards, in 2000 he was elected to the Hall of Fame of the National Capital Chapter, Public Relations Society of America. (See Who's Who in America.)
JOHN HEINZE, PhD
Principal and Senior Vice President for science, Heinze specializes in the public affairs aspects of environmental safety and health issues. A particular focus has been the communication of health and environmental safety assessment information, including the OECD SIDS program and the EPA High Production Volume Chemicals program. He helps clients communicate the significance of new research findings to government and the media. He has authored and edited numerous scientific papers and public policy analyses, including a detailed documentation of the harmful effects of political agendas on the scientific process.
Heinze received his doctorate in microbiology from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, and conducted two years of postdoctoral study in molecular biology and genetics at the National Institutes of Health. He was a senior research microbiologist and research manager for consumer testing at the Dial Corporation, where he evaluated the reliability of microbiological and cell culture assays for assuring the safety and efficacy of potential new ingredients.
ANN CRAMPTON
Vice President Ann Crampton specializes in media relations and special events. For many years, she conducted an award-winning national safety campaign to prevent fireworks injuries, resulting in a dramatic reduction of injuries to children. On behalf of the White House, she managed all media and Congressional coordination for Lech Walesa's historic visit to the United States in 1989, and handled media for other Solidarity leaders in the period leading up to the fall of communism in Poland and Eastern Europe. She now supervises the firm's national and global media activities on behalf of multinational corporations, industry groups and non-profit organizations.
FRANCIE ISRAELI
Senior Vice President Francie Israeli is responsible for coordinating advocacy and issue-driven media campaigns on behalf of several clients, particularly on environmental issues. She regularly writes and places articles, arranges media interviews, executes editorial board meetings with major local and national publications, prepares speeches and arranges speaking platforms for clients. She has also organized client exhibits at major scientific conferences in Europe as well as the U.S. for trade association clients.
Israeli joined John Adams Associates after graduating in journalism and art history at the University of Maryland. A native of New York City, she worked in Newsweek’s publicity department in New York as well as the National Gallery of Art in Washington before joining John Adams Associates. She is a member of the Board of Directors of The Worldcom Group, the world’s leading network of independently owned public relations counseling firms.
MICHELLE KINCAID
Account Executive Michelle Kincaid joined John Adams Associates after graduating from Virginia Tech with a B.A. in communications. She works with a broad range of clients to help them achieve their media goals, developing stories on issues as diverse as organ donation, cyber security, Native American community development and telecommunication regulations. Major placements have included USA Today, the Washington Post, Business Week and People Magazine.
RACHNA SETHI
Vice President Rachna Sethi has worked on corporate and organizational communications programs for a wide variety of clients. Sethi manages communications on behalf of several trade associations, is editor of JAA’s daily Executive Briefing, and oversees a comprehensive daily monitoring program on a number of complex client issues. She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she studied political science and public relations.
ROBERT CUTHRIELL
Senior Consultant Robert Cuthriell has more than 25 years of editorial and managerial experience in journalism, publishing and communications. He served in a senior staff position with the U.S. House of Representatives, where he was Chief of the House Legislative Resource Center, and for more than two decades held senior positions with Congressional Quarterly Inc., where he was a senior editor and director of information services. He developed and managed numerous new business lines, including the CQ Press political science imprint, the CQ seminar and conference business, and Washington Alert (now on the Web as CQ.com on Congress), the company's comprehensive online service tracking Congress and public policy.
A graduate of Stanford University with a masters degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin - Madison, Cuthriell taught American government on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point. He is a Vietnam Veteran and captain in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
MICHAEL K. EVANS, PhD
Senior Consultant Michael K. Evans is a noted economist and recognized authority on the unintended economic impacts of government regulations. A former professor of economics at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University, and the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, he was one of the creators of the Wharton Model of the U.S. economy. He has served as a consultant to the Senate Finance Committee, the U.S. Treasury and other federal agencies, as well as the international Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). He was founder and president of the economics forecasting firm Chase Econometric Associates and, later, Evans Economics. He is the author of numerous business books including Macroeconomics for Managers and Practical Business Forecasting, and his articles on economic issues have appeared in the Wall Street Journal and other major publications. Dr. Evans received his Ph.D. in economics from Brown University.
JOHN FOGARTY
Senior Consultant John Fogarty is a longtime member of Washington's political press corps, a former President of the National Press Club and of the U.S. Senate Press Secretaries Association. As a journalist, he has reported for nearly 30 years on government and politics in the nation's capital, serving as an editor of the prestigious Kiplinger Letters and White House Bulletin, and Washington bureau chief of the San Francisco Chronicle.
In addition to his experience as a Senate press secretary and communications director, he served as head of public affairs for the White House Council on Environmental Quality and assistant to the Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
JACK LACOVEY
Senior Consultant Jack LaCovey is a former Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist who served in the White House Press Office under President Ford and traveled extensively with President Reagan supporting the press needs of the traveling White House. He served for eight years as director of public affairs for the nation's leading air and ocean scientific agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
More recently, he has specialized in developing winning issues management strategies for major corporations and industry associations.
GILBERT F. KLEIN
Senior Consultant Klein specializes in media relations. He is currently a professor of journalism at American University Washington Semester Program. A former White House and national correspondent and environment and energy reporter for Media General News Service and the Tampa Tribune, Klein’s coverage included major news stories like the Three Mile Island nuclear crisis, Bush-Gorbachev summit and the Clinton impeachment. He is the winner of numerous journalism awards, and served as president of the National Press Club.
HUGH PATRICK TONER
Senior Consultant Hugh Patrick Toner specializes in technical and regulatory affairs, industry codes and standards. A chemical engineer with extensive experience in research, manufacturing, product approvals and regulatory compliance, he has managed numerous toxicology and product performance studies, and has testified on technical issues before regulatory agencies, code bodies and standards organizations.
A former vice president of technical affairs for the Society of the Plastics Industry, 1989-99, he served as chairman of the ISO technical committee on plastics and a board member of the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA). He has a masters degree in chemical engineering from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA from the University of Southern Maine.
BEN ZINGMAN, PhD
Senior Consultant Ben Zingman has specialized in strategy development, issues management and crisis communications for numerous blue-chip corporations, trade associations and non-profit organizations for more than two decades, successfully combining media, community and government relations. He has particular experience managing environmental, energy and international trade issues.
Zingman also has helped global corporations develop diversity policies and strategic philanthropy programs in the U.S., as well as employee education and grassroots programs. He has a Ph.D. in political science from Rutgers University and is a member of the Communications in Contemporary Society faculty within the Advanced Academic Programs at The Johns Hopkins University.
